2008 & Still Current (2008 NCAA Rulebook)

Initiating Contact/Targeting an Oppenent
1. No player shall initiate contact and target an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul.

2. No player shall initiate contact and target a defenseless opponent above the shoulders. When in question, it is a foul.

 
2005-2007 (2005 NCAA Rulebook)

1. Spearing is the use of the helmet (including the face mask) in an attempt to punish an opponent.
2. No player shall use his helmet (including the face mask) to butt or ram an opponent or attempt to punish him.
3. No player shall strike a runner with the crown or top of the helmet in an attempt to punish him.

1. Spearing is the intentional use of the helmet (including the face mask) in an attempt to punish an opponent.
2. No player intentionally shall use his helmet (including the face mask) to butt or ram an opponent.
3. No player intentionally shall strike a runner with the crown or top of his helmet.

1. Spearing is the deliberate use of the helemt in an attempt to punish an opponent.
2. No player shall deliberately use his helmet to butt or ram an opponent.
3. No player shall intentionally strike a runner with the crown or top of his helmet.

1. Spearing is the deliberate and malicious use of the head and helmet in an attempt to punish an opponent after his momentum has been stopped.
2. No player shall deliberately and maliciously use helmet or head to butt or ram an opponent.

Helmet Contact- Illegal
Illegal helmet contact is an act of initiating contact with the helmet against an opponent. There are several types of illegal helmet contact:

1. Spearing is an act by an offensive or defensive player who initiates contact against any opponent with the top of his helmet.
2. Face Tackling is an act by a defensive player who initiates contact with a ball carrier with the front of his helmet.
3. Butt Blocking is an act by an offensive or defensive player who initiates contact against an opponent who is not the ball carrier with the front of his helmet.

 
2006

1. Spearing is the use of the helmet in an attempt to punish an opponent.
2. Face Tackling is driving the face mask, frontal area, or top of the helmet directly into the runner.
3. Butt blocking is a technique involving a blow driven directly into an opponent with the face mask, frontal area, or top of the hemet as the primary point of contact either in close line play or in the open field.
4. Illegal personal contact occurs when a player intentionally uses his helmet to butt or ram an opponent.
